Justin Baldoni‘s attempt to prove Ryan Reynolds was bullying him with the Nicepool character in Deadpool & Wolverine might be an accidental admission of guilt.

The actor and director’s legal team demanded that Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige and Disney CEO Bob Iger hold on to any documents that might prove Ryan Reynolds used him as inspiration for the satirical Deadpool & Wolverine character. Variety reported Tuesday that both men received a litigation hold letter from attorney Bryan Freedman on Jan. 7 asking “the studio to preserve all relevant documents and data with regards to Baldoni.”

If Justin Baldoni identifies with Nicepool, well… That’s on him?

Baldoni is apparently convinced Ryan Reynolds created the Deadpool variant known as Nicepool to mock him, even though there’s nothing in the film that directly references the It Ends With Us star.

Those who flocked to theaters in July of last year to see Deadpool and Wolverine’s grand introductions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the Shawn Levy-directed action blockbuster will recall that Nicepool was one of the stand-out Deadpool variants introduced. A proud man-bun-wearer, this Deadpool is purposefully over the top and obnoxiously positive, though his mask does slip from time to time.

In Nicepool’s first scene, he comments on Ladypool’s post-pregnancy body, saying you couldn’t even tell she had had a baby. When Deadpool tells him he’s not “supposed to say that” he replies with “That’s okay, I identify as a feminist.” Of course, in the lawsuit that Reynolds’ wife Blake Lively filed against Baldoni in December, among the allegations that the latter maintains are completely false is one about him pressuring his co-star to lose weight after having her fourth baby. Lively and Reynolds’s son Olin was born months before shooting for It Ends With Us began in May 2023.

The lawsuit has also threatened to shatter, or has in fact shattered, Baldoni’s image as an ally for women’s issues. Shortly after the news of Lively’s claims came out, the Vital Voices Global Partnership stripped the 40-year-old of his Voices of Solidarity Award, which celebrated his “courage and compassion in advocating on behalf of women and girls.”

Besides a similar hairstyle, however, there’s no direct reference to Baldoni in the character of Nicepool, so it might actually be detrimental for the actor to strive to convince anyone that Reynolds based the character on him. As one netizen put it, “Nicepool was a stereotypical creepy faux feminist sex pest so if Justin Baldoni wants to think that’s inspired by him then that says a lot more about him than it does anyone else.”

“Out of everything he’s done and said, ironically this might be the most damning thing because what do you mean you saw a fake ass performative feminist and thought ‘wait that is so me,’” another pointed out.

Some have theorized that having Ladypool, played by Blake Lively, violently shoot Nicepool’s head off in front of a flower shop was a nod to It Ends With Us as in that film, Lively’s character Lily Bloom starts a flower business.

Baldoni and Freedman are preparing a countersuit against Lively. In a Jan. 7 appearance on The Megyn Kelly Show, the lawyer said Lively was “no victim,” that she was in control and “took over” the film’s final cut. The two insist that it was Lively who orchestrated a PR takedown of Baldoni and not the other way around.

Jonathan Bailey, the man, the myth, the moment. It doesn’t matter if you fell for him when he was the brooding Viscount Anthony Bridgerton, or you’ve recently been enchanted by his performance as Prince Fiyero in Wicked. One thing’s clear: Bailey’s got everyone under his spell

And now, even the king of wit himself, Ryan Reynolds, can’t resist catching a case of the Jonathan Bailey bug. The National Board of Review (NBR) Awards was held yesterday in New York, and the gala was brimming with Hollywood’s finest, celebrating the best in film. But honestly, who needs trophies when you’ve got Bailey stealing hearts left and right? The actor, fresh off his role in Jon M. Chu’s adaptation, not only dazzled audiences on-screen, but also charmed the likes of Reynolds, who couldn’t resist putting Bailey in the spotlight.

Jealous, Ryan?

When Reynolds took to the stage, he delivered what can only be described as a love letter wrapped in sarcasm and dipped in pure admiration.

I think we can all agree that Jonathan Bailey is objectively perfect. Perhaps too perfect.

And he didn’t stop there. Reynolds hilariously claimed that Bailey’s magnetic charisma could destabilize the Hollywood Leading Men Society (HLMS), and called for an intervention: “It is in our collective best interest that Jonathan Bailey tone it the f*** down.”

Tone it down? Honestly, Ryan, we love you, but never. Bailey’s perfection is what keeps us going. His speech sent waves of laughter through the audience. Of course, Reynolds’ playful jabs only underline the reality that Bailey’s performance in Wicked has everyone talking. Fans can’t get over his show-stopping dance number in “Dancing Through Life,” a scene that perfectly shows his ability to entertain, not just as an actor, but as a performer. Watching him move with effortless grace? At this point, it’s like a public service for us.

One fan hilariously summed up the mood online: “I know Jonny was kicking his feet and giggling omg.” And let’s be real, that visual is quite plausible. Bailey has always had that self-aware, cheeky charm that makes him seem like your ultimate dream crush and your fun best friend rolled into one.

The Jonathan Bailey effect

Then again, Bailey isn’t just a pretty face or a talented performer: he’s a whole vibe. His ability to light up a room, whether on-screen, on-stage, or in an interview, is unmatched. He’s the kind of guy who makes you feel like he’s winking directly at you through the screen, and let’s face it, maybe he is. And it’s not just fans who’ve fallen for him. Fellow actors, from Bridgerton co-stars to Hollywood heavyweights like Reynolds, can’t help but gush over his talent and charm. Altogether, Bailey seems to have mastered the art of making everyone, from the audience to his peers, feel like they’re part of the Jonathan Bailey fan club.

With Wicked already setting the stage for him to conquer Hollywood, his future is evidently as dazzling as his smile. And while Reynolds might jokingly call for him to “tone it down,” we’re all here for Bailey cranking it all the way up. We might not survive it, but it’ll definitely be worth it.

Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds has earned the ire of a handful of fans after a few have noticed that Nicepool from Deadpool & Wolverine said and did things in the movie that, in the context of the Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively drama, seemed to suggest the character is based on Baldoni.

It Ends with Us saw a lot of on-set drama between its two stars, and that drama will potentially be spilling out into a courtroom, with both actors now suing each other. Blake has accused her co-star of sexual harassment, claiming that he behaved inappropriately on set and that he tried to run a smear campaign against her. Meanwhile, Justin has fired back, refuting Lively’s claims and instead claiming she was the one engaging in a smear campaign against him.

Right now the waters are muddy; it’s difficult to know who’s telling the truth and who’s not. Many are supportive of Blake, but others believe Justin’s account of what happened. Regardless, all we know for sure is that things quickly became hostile while on set and they remained that way throughout the movie’s premiere and into today. We also know Lively even brought her husband, Reynolds, on set at one point — apparently the meeting between Baldoni and Reynolds didn’t go well, with the Green Lantern star apparently berating Baldoni and leaving him traumatized.

Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively are accused of bullying

In his lawsuit, Baldoni claims the pair were “bullying” him during the production of the movie. He refuted many of Lively’s other claims and provided text messages that back up his side of the story. His side of the story has won some audiences over, with fans defending him online. Many have even started digging and think they’ve found some solid evidence that Reynolds and Lively were indeed bullying Baldoni. That evidence, of course, is the character Nicepool.

Fans noticed that everything about Nicepool — from the way he looked, to the things he said —allude to Baldoni. One fan on X pointed out that the character looked almost identical to Baldoni from 2023, with his long curly hair and man bun. It’s hard to deny there are some similarities there.

But that’s not all — Nicepool also comments on Ladypool’s post-pregnancy body, (Baldoni allegedly fat-shamed Lively) and, as we all know, Ladypool was played by Lively.

Over on TikTok, people began questioning the scale of the bullying — if Nicepool really was based on Baldoni then this would suggest the bullying goes way beyond social media.

Another TikToker, @theredcoquette, mentioned deleted scenes, which she claims were blatant jabs at Justin.

Replying to @Stacey3004 At the very least this will not work in RR and BL’s favor if they go to trial.

Of course it gets worse when you factor in that Nicepool is brutally killed off by Ladypool, and he’s the only version of Deadpool without regenerative powers.

Deadpool & Wolverine’s filming schedule makes this theory unlikely

Now, can we say conclusively that Ryan Reynolds meant this character to be a jab at Justin Baldoni? No we can’t. While the striking similarity might seem like proof enough, it would have been unlikely that Reynolds would have been able to add an entirely new character into the film as all this was happening.

Both movies were filmed around the same time, with both starting mid-2023 before pausing production during the strikes. Deadpool & Wolverine resumed filming in November 2023 and finished in January 2024. Meanwhile, It Ends with Us resumed filming in January 2024. According to CBR.com, Lively’s lawsuit mentions a meeting prior to the resume of filming, which would have been close to the time Deadpool & Wolverine was wrapping up. It’s not impossible that Ryan added Nicepool to troll Baldoni, and then ad-libbed the character’s lines and likeness to Baldoni, but it’s very unlikely.

Every way you look at it, Deadpool & Wolverine is a hit. The Marvel Studios movie wrapped its theatrical run as the second highest-grossing movie of 2024, and the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever at $1.3 billion raked in worldwide. But that story could have been very different if star and producer Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy hadn’t pushed for one small element.

In a recent interview with IndieWire, the duo revealed that something as simple as the title of the movie was reason enough for some heated debate during the early days of production. Reynolds commented the name “Wolverine” (the main character played by Hugh Jackman) almost didn’t make it to the final title, and the extremely popular mutant was certainly one of the reasons why audiences were lured into movie theaters. And Wolverine was not the only Marvel character that they had problems to lock in. He stated:

“For some reason, we weren’t allowed to use the name Wolverine in the title. I’d have no idea why, some weird loophole thing, but at the last minute, we changed it to ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ and they somehow pushed it through. But a lot of times, it’s persistence. We were told we couldn’t use Blade or Gambit.”

As you probably know, the Deadpool & Wolverine team ended up managing to have both Blade and Gambit in the movie. The former was reprised by Wesley Snipes (Demolition Man) twenty years after he wrapped the Blade trilogy for 20th Century Fox. The latter was played by Channing Tatum (Magic Mike, Blink Twice), who had been associated with the characters for years. Deadpool & Wolverine also features Jennifer Garner (Family Switch) as Elektra and Dafne Keen (The Acolyte) returning as X23.

Levy went on to reveal that the starting point of many decisions in Deadpool & Wolverine was disheartening. Luckily for fans, they were adamant in several story decisions and they knew exactly what would resonate with audiences and eventually make the movie a dollar-generating machine. But they had to battle the legal team first:

“A lot of things started with ‘no.’ Not because they were micromanaging, but because the lawyers down the hall said, ‘That’s not part of the deal.’ And yeah, we were hopefully respectful hammers. But for sure, we were hammers. If we felt that something was right for this story, if it became a had to have, then we just were a little bit relentless.”

Wolverine’s name also had to be on Deadpool & Wolverine because it represents the beginning of a new era for Marvel in cinemas. Until 2019, some Marvel characters like the X-Men were property of 20th Centuty Fox studios. After Disney bought the company, it meant that those Marvel characters could finally be integrated into the ever-growing world of Iron Man, Thor and Captain America. From the looks of it, though, getting our favorite Marvel characters on the big screen under the Marvel Studios label didn’t come as easily as it looks.

Deadpool & Wolverine‘s worldwide gross is also a beacon of hope for Disney and Marvel Studios, since audiences haven’t responded as well as expected for some of the superhero entries in cinemas. The R-rated title underscores that audiences are still willing to show up, but only if the studios commit to bringing something different and exciting to the screen, instead of being tied to formulas that no longer work.

Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively‘s issues on the set of It Ends With Us continued beyond the film’s premiere and subsequent release on streaming. The movie, which tackles tough themes of domestic violence, unexpectedly backfired on Lively.

After a rocky promotional tour, she took legal action against Baldoni. Now, Baldoni is hitting back, claiming that Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, have been “bullying” him. The new lawsuit against The New York Times, which released the report of Lively’s legal complaint tells Baldoni’s version of events. The actor starred in the film, as well as directed and produced through his company Wayfarer Studios, and the film was distributed by Sony Pictures.

While It Ends With Us found amazing commercial success, ending its theatrical run just shy of $350 million (via The Numbers) against a modest $25 million, the drama was bigger behind-the-scenes than it was on the screen. Baldoni is not planning to go down quietly and has refuted Lively’s allegations with additional claims.

Justin Baldoni claims Ryan Reynolds ‘berated’ him during a meeting

In the bombshell lawsuit against The Times, released by Variety, Baldoni recalls a heated meeting at Reynolds and Lively’s Tribeca home. The lawsuit notes Lively and Reynolds invited Baldoni and other producers on It Ends With Us, as well as a Sony rep to their home on the evening of Jan. 4, 2024, before filming resumed after being paused by the dual strikes in 2024.

The legal action notes the group “arrived eager” to start discussing the plans for when they resumed filming the next day. “Instead, they were blindsided by Lively and Reynolds, who presented a list of grievances that were both unanticipated and troubling.” Baldoni claims “Reynolds launched into a tirade, berating” him, who described it as a “traumatic” encounter. The Deadpool & Wolverine star allegedly wanted him to apologize for fat-shaming his wife.

“When Baldoni resisted apologizing for what he had not done, Reynolds became further enraged. Everyone, including the producer Lively had asked production to engage and a representative of Sony that was in attendance left that meeting in shock. A producer who attended the meeting claims that, in his 40-year career, he had never seen anyone speak to someone like that.” The Sony rep reportedly claimed Lively “would often think of that meeting,” adding that her “one regret” was that “she didn’t stop Reynolds’ berating of Baldoni.”

Baldoni further claimed that after filming was complete, Lively took over the project and refused to walk the red carpet or let him attend the premiere. He further accuses her and her husband Reynolds of using their power to damage him. He claims that Reynolds approached Baldoni’s agent at WME and demanded they “drop” him. The actor was subsequently dropped by the agency after Lively’s lawsuit, but a rep denied that it was because of Reynolds’ involvement.

The Jane the Virgin actor further claimed he never signed Lively’s CRD complaint about the on-set issues. “No such document was ever presented to Baldoni, the Wayfarer team, or, to their knowledge, anyone else — whether during that meeting or at any other time — and therefore, could not have been agreed to.”

In reality, many of these items were encountered for the first time in the CRD Complaint itself and include references to highly disturbing events that never occurred. The repeated use of the phrase ‘no more’ before each demand falsely suggests that these alleged incidents had previously taken place and needed to cease. This implication is not only misleading but entirely untrue

The lawsuit further clarifies Lively’s allegations about entering her makeup trailer uninvited, his publicist Melissa Nathan and Jennifer Abel’s text messages, which they claim were taken out of context, as well as producers Jamey Heath and Steve Sarowitz’s messages. Baldoni also accuses Lively of embarking on a “strategic and manipulative” smear campaign of her own.

Blake Lively’s family isn’t sitting on the sidelines when it comes to defending her amidst her ongoing legal drama with It Ends With Us director and co-star Justin Baldoni. Lively’s brother-in-law, Bart Johnson, has taken to Instagram to deliver some scathing commentary about the allegations surrounding Baldoni, and let’s just say, he’s not holding back.

It ends… in court.

For those out of the loop, the drama began months ago when whispers of behind-the-scenes conflict on the set of It Ends With Us started circulating. Fast forward to now, and things are way past rumors. Lively, in a recently filed legal complaint, has accused Baldoni of sexual harassment and retaliation. According to the filing obtained by PEOPLE, Baldoni’s alleged actions left her dealing with “grief, fear, trauma, and extreme anxiety.”Lively also claims Baldoni retaliated by launching a full-blown smear campaign to wreck her reputation. It involves secret meetings, strategic PR moves, and some seriously messy text messages.

Lively’s complaint goes into excruciating detail about what allegedly happened. It describes a meeting involving producers and Lively’s husband, Ryan Reynolds, where Baldoni’s behavior was addressed. Initially, it seemed like there was support for Lively from Sony Pictures and Wayfarer Studios (Baldoni’s own company). But, according to the filing, things took a sharp turn when Baldoni allegedly started a “social manipulation” campaign. Screenshots of texts and emails included in the complaint paint a picture of a calculated effort to discredit Lively publicly.

Family first!

Enter Johnson, who decided to hop onto Instagram and set the record straight after The New York Times shared an article about the allegations. He wrote: “Her complaints were filed during the filming. On record. Long before the public conflict. The cast unfollowed him for a reason. Read this article before spiting ignorance.”

Johnson didn’t stop there. He called out Baldoni’s alleged PR tactics, labeling them “gross and disgusting but highly effective.” According to Johnson, Baldoni isn’t quite the shiny “good guy” he might appear to be in public. He even said, “He puts on the ‘costume’ of a hero, but behind the scenes, it’s a different story.” Johnson wasn’t about to let the internet critics have their way with Lively, either. Responding to the backlash, he reminded everyone how much she juggles.

Just IMAGINE being a stay-at-home mom raising 4 kids, married to the busiest man in Hollywood, running multiple companies, working 16+ hour days, and launching businesses while being attacked by a VERY expensive PR smear campaign.

He also clapped back at those dredging up old interviews to criticize Lively, pointing out that no one is without sin and people shouldn’t discount decades of good because of a few bad moments. The legal drama is far from over, and it’s already sparked major discussions about accountability in Hollywood. Baldoni, for his part, hasn’t publicly addressed the allegations yet, but the internet is watching closely. One thing’s for sure, Blake Lively isn’t standing alone. With her brother-in-law and husband firmly in her corner, it’s clear this fight is just beginning.

It Ends With Us director and star, Justin Baldoni supposedly decided to run a smear campaign against co-star Blake Lively after one action from Ryan Reynolds sent him into panic mode.

The marketing for It Ends With Us was already struggling prior to its release and much of the blame was put on Blake due to her tone-deaf promotion of the film along with her supposedly taking over production. However, in her sexual harassment lawsuit against co-star Justin, she also included an accusation against the actor claiming he ran a smear campaign against her which made her look a whole lot worse. Now it’s been revealed that the catalyst for Baldoni’s supposed crusade against Lively may have been spurred by Ryan Reynolds blocking him on Instagram.

Supposed text messages between Baldoni and his publicist obtained by Page Six showed that the actor was concerned after discovering that the Deadpool star blocked him along with his production company Wayfarer Studios on Instagram. This allegedly happened months before Lively filed her sexual harassment complaint against Baldoni

Justin Baldoni allegedly planned a smear campaign against Blake Lively

The conversations show that the actor was concerned that Lively would follow suit and block him once the movie was released, prompting him to concoct a “plan” for that possibility. Baldoni allegedly texted his publicist saying, “We should have a plan for IF she does the same when [the] movie comes out.” And reportedly, the said plan was to make Lively look so bad that her words against him wouldn’t mean squat.

Rumors of a serious on-set feud between the pair had been making the rounds for a while prior to the film’s release. The two actors did not interact with each other at the New York City premiere and the Jane the Virgin actor allegedly hired a PR crisis Management team back in August. If Lively’s accusations and the texts are to be believed then it would certainly prove he had planned to ruin her reputation so the backlash she received could be attributed to him in part.

What accusations did Blake Lively make against Justin Baldoni?

Lively claimed that her co-star was behaving inappropriately and had made her incredibly uncomfortable on numerous occasions. In fact, she felt so uncomfortable that she called an “all hands” meeting where she tried to establish boundaries. She asked him to stop showing her nude images and videos of women and stop mentioning his past porn addiction as well as cease talking about the “cast and crew’s genitalia.”

The complaint filed also alleges that Baldoni improvised kissing scenes, and added “gratuitous sexual content,” as well as made inappropriate comments. The lawsuit also claims that the supposed social media campaigns against Lively allegedly came from Baldoni.

The actor has since been dropped as a client by WME while Lively continues to be represented by the talent agency. The actor and Wayfarer Studios lawyer, Brian Freedman denied the accusations, asserting that “these claims are completely false, outrageous and intentionally salacious with an intent to publicly hurt and rehash a narrative in the media.” Meanwhile, Lively is hopeful that the lawsuit filed against Baldoni will help “pull back the curtain on these sinister retaliatory tactics” as well as protect others who may be targeted.

As one of Hollywood’s biggest power couples, Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively know how to rake in the rewards, but one thing they seem to struggle with is reading the room. For example, 2024 has seen them star in two of the year’s biggest films — Deadpool & Wolverine and It Ends With Us, respectively — and yet both of them have also come under fire online for things they’ve said and done. And, whoops, wouldn’t you know it, it’s happening again.

Reynolds, fresh off his Actors on Actors interview with Andrew Garfield turning social media against him, has put his foot in it again with some comments he made about his and his wife’s upbringing. Reynolds was reflecting on how different a childhood he’s able to give his kids in comparison to his own when he said something that may not be entirely factually accurate.

“We try to give them as normal a life as possible,” the Canadian star mused to The Hollywood Reporter. “I try not to impose upon them the difference in their childhood to my childhood or my wife’s childhood.” So far so harmless, but it was his following comments that raised eyebrows:

“We both grew up very working-class, and I remember when they were very young, I used to say or think, like, ‘Oh God, I would never have had a gift like this when I was a kid,’ or, ‘I never would’ve had this luxury of getting takeout,’ or whatever.”

Unfortunately, it only takes a five-second Google search to see that the 48-year-old might’ve been stretching the truth a little there. While Reynolds could be said to come from a working-class background — his father was a Canadian Mountie and his mother worked in retail — he might be projecting when it comes to his wife. Lively, 37, is part of a bonafide tinseltown dynasty. Her father, Ernie, was an actor/filmmaker, and her mother, Elaine, was a talent scout. Her four siblings are likewise actors. Her first movie role came at the age of 10 in The Sandman… directed by her dad. If you looked the term “nepo baby” up in a dictionary, you’d find a picture of Blake Lively.

To say social media roasted Ryan’s remarks to a crisp, then, would be like saying Deadpool is a tad chatty. “Quick search: She grew up in Tarzana and then went to Burbank High. Her whole family was in the entertainment business,” reads one comment on Instagram. “She was cast in Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants while she was a teen,” goes another. “It’s giving at least middle class. Anyway none of that matters because she’s rich and insufferable now. Bye.”

“You keep using that word, ‘working-class.’ I do not think it means what you think it means,” wrote one wannabe Inigo Montoya. “Omg yes like how the working class totally get married on plantations! So casual. So proletariat, comrade!” scorched one more, while Regina George entered the chat: “Stop trying to make Relatable Blake happen, it’s NOT going to happen.”

This is just the latest in a long line of misjudged mutterings and moments on the couple’s part. As the comment above reminds us, they started as they meant to go on by getting hitched in the most controversial setting possible, and this year has seen Lively come under fire for her lighthearted promotion of It Ends With Us, a movie featuring domestic abuse, while Reynolds recently ruffled feathers for mocking the indie film industry. If the pair are campaigning for the Most Out-Of-Touch Couple Award, they might just have it in the bag. As one more comment put it, “The ignorance of those two needs to be studied.”

It’s easy to argue that the hate for this duo is overblown at this point, as a few tone-deaf comments are small-fry compared to some Hollywood heavyweights’ crimes, but Reynolds and Lively definitely don’t do themselves any favors when they misspeak like this. But, hey, that’s one more thing that makes Ryan such a perfect Deadpool — he doesn’t always know when to zip it.

‘People are so nasty’: Ryan Reynolds forced to drop his humor as Andrew Garfield is weaponized to insult the actor https://wegotthiscovered.com/celebrities/people-are-so-nasty-ryan-reynolds-forced-to-drop-his-humor-as-andrew-garfield-is-weaponized-to-insult-the-actor/ https://wegotthiscovered.com/celebrities/people-are-so-nasty-ryan-reynolds-forced-to-drop-his-humor-as-andrew-garfield-is-weaponized-to-insult-the-actor/#respond Sun, 08 Dec 2024 16:26:34 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.com/?p=1806625 "You intentionally hide the stitching and unstitching."]]>

Ryan Reynolds is not just a comedy star but is also renowned for his witty humor in real life. But when faced with a mocking insult at the expense of Andrew Garfield, the actor had no option but to become serious.

Each year, Variety pairs actors together for a filmed chat where they talk about their craft, their experiences in the industry, and all sorts of other things that come up. Called Actors on Actors, it has some interesting pairs — such as an upcoming chat between Andrew Garfield and Ryan Reynolds.

That’s one interesting combination, right?

Well, not everyone was happy with the pairing. One X/Twitter user took to the platform to offer their opinion on the match in a since-protected tweet, seemingly criticizing the upcoming segment’s quality that would be, in their opinion, diminished by a comedy-centric actor like Reynolds talking about his funny roles.

“Andrew Garfield talking about playing a husband and father who’s [sic] wife decides to forgo cancer treatment and Ryan Reynolds talking about playing Deadpool.”

The tweet draws a distinction between comedic acting and dramatic acting, the implication being that the conversation match-up is poor, and while everyone is entitled to an opinion, this is one opinion that didn’t go over well with everyone. Ryan Reynolds himself became aware of the tweet and responded, giving his two cents on the situation, letting the one who posted the polarising criticism and everyone else who agreed with the opinion that comedy isn’t as “effortless” as it looks.

Ryan is quick to praise Andrew’s performance, calling him a “genius.” He then goes on to offer a well-considered defense of comedic acting, saying that both disciplines are difficult — but for different reasons. Dramatic acting is difficult because the audience has to see and feel the work that goes into it, but comedic acting is the exact opposite, where if the audience can see the work that goes into it, it falls flat. Dramatic acting “feels visceral and effective” and it’s because the audience is meant to see the difficulty behind it. In contrast, Reynolds finds comedic acting is “meant to look and feel effortless.”

Users on X agreed with Reynolds, taking to the platform to show their support. Much of the commentary directly discussed the role of comedy and drama in acting, and the work that goes into each. The claim that comedy was only meant to look easy resonated with users:

While everyone is entitled to free speech, the attempt to mock comedy as a lesser art form and insulting Reynolds in the process didn’t sit right with ardent fans of both the genre and the actor.

https://twitter.com/FolkloreMarTS/status/1865071871126892794

It’s clear the original tweet struck a nerve, for both Ryan Reynolds and many comedy enthusiasts. Ryan’s response underlines just how much the actor has thought about his craft, from the emotion required to sell a joke to the behind-the-scenes work necessary to put all the parts together. As always, art is subjective. People enjoy different things. Not everything has to be for everyone, and it’s fair to prefer drama to comedy or action thrillers to cozy mysteries.

While it’s fair to have an opinion, it doesn’t seem right to use one actor to attack another — especially in the context of Actors on Actors. Sometimes, the juxtaposition in experience is fertile ground for an interesting and engaging conversation, with differences in perspective adding depth to a conversation. Where there are similarities, they can be discussed; where there are differences, they can be explored. This is a vital point that the original tweet apparently failed to consider but was addressed beautifully by Ryan’s response.

A former DC star wasn’t even remotely interested in entertaining James Gunn’s joke of joining the DCU https://wegotthiscovered.com/news/a-former-dc-star-wasnt-even-remotely-interested-in-entertaining-james-gunns-joke-of-joining-the-dcu/ https://wegotthiscovered.com/news/a-former-dc-star-wasnt-even-remotely-interested-in-entertaining-james-gunns-joke-of-joining-the-dcu/#respond Fri, 06 Dec 2024 00:12:55 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.com/?p=1805767 Nobody should be surprised.]]>

With James Gunn at the helm of the DCU, several members of the old regime have shared their desire to come back for more, however, there’s one of them who has absolutely no desire to dive into DC ever again, and we can’t really blame them.

In November of 2022, Gunn and Peter Safran became the co-bosses of DC Films marking a huge change in the franchise’s future and upcoming slate of films. This meant that almost everyone who had been a part of the previous films would not be coming back, at least not in the same roles.

During the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Gunn revealed that he had approached former DC star Ryan Reynolds to join the DCU — as a joke, and the reaction from the former Green Lantern was exactly what you’d expect.

“Ryan doesn’t give a sh*t. One of the first people I talked to after getting the job was Ryan Reynolds. I’m like, ‘You coming back?’ He’s like, ‘Get the f*** out of here.’ I’m joking! I wasn’t really telling him to come back.”

If you’ve heard Reynolds speak about his Green Lantern film before, or you have ever seen an interview with him in general or one of his Marvel Deadpool films then it shouldn’t be any mystery why he wouldn’t want to come back to DC. His time as Hal Jordan was by far a career low point for the actor, and something he’s done well to distance himself from.

There are a few reasons that the Green Lantern movie flopped, and they really have nothing to do with Reynolds himself. The biggest problems were the story, and how it made use of iconic DC characters. Comic fans always want to see faithful adaptions of their favorite action heroes onscreen, and Green Lantern did a terrible job at providing that. Coupled with the terrible CGI that was used for absolutely everything in the film including Reynolds’s super suit, the movie was primed for failure, and critics and fans didn’t hold back.

Right now more than 10 years later, the movie has a terrible 25% reviewer score on Rotten Tomatoes, with an audience rating that’s only slightly better at 45%. Time has not been kind to this film, but there is a glimmer of hope for fans of the comic character.

Green Lantern is coming back to the DCU, but it just won’t be with Reynolds in the role. Lanterns is a new series set to be released in the future that will introduce the Green Lantern comic characters to the DCU. There have already been three Green Lantern Corps members cast and they will be played by Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, and Nathan Fillion. Hopefully with Gunn at the helm and a new story to tell, we can finally get the Green Lantern adaption we deserve.

If you’ve never seen the 2011 Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds and want to make up your own opinion then you can stream the movie on Amazon Video or Apple TV now.

Blake Lively channels Dorothy at special ‘Wicked’ screening, but there’s one detail completely spoiling her tribute https://wegotthiscovered.com/celebrities/blake-lively-channels-dorothy-at-special-wicked-screening-but-theres-one-detail-completely-spoiling-her-tribute/ https://wegotthiscovered.com/celebrities/blake-lively-channels-dorothy-at-special-wicked-screening-but-theres-one-detail-completely-spoiling-her-tribute/#respond Thu, 05 Dec 2024 14:29:23 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.com/?p=1805196 Talk about a magical date night.]]>

Blake Lively knows how to put on a magical outfit. A few weeks after Wicked‘s premiere, she and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, got some time off to attend the screening, and she not-so-subtly paid tribute to Dorothy with her look.

Lively and Reynolds are the parents of four young children, so they had to wait before they had time for a date night. Since they are celebrities, they didn’t simply attend a regular screening of Wicked like us mortals. Instead, they attended a special screening on Dec. 3 at Metrograph in NYC alongside stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.

The two posed with the lead actresses and Lively even went one step further and dressed with a tribute to The Wizard of Oz that wasn’t either pink or green, but ruby.

Blake Lively finally got a chance to do method dressing with a tribute to Dorothy

Blake Lively has always taken pride in her styling, and she often hits the mark with all her red carpet-outfits. She was the official Met Gala queen, as she understood the theme perfectly and turned heads with her looks. However, it all came crashing down this year, when she attempted to do method dressing for her It Ends With Us character, Lily Bloom.

The controversy surrounding the drama film goes further than her outfits, although Lively did her best to “wear her florals” throughout the entire press tour.

She has since moved on from the film and stopped acknowledging it altogether, and now got a chance to put her skills to work for the night out with her husband, Ryan Reynolds. The Gossip Girl star understood the assignment as she donned a pair of Marc Jacobs Kiki platform Many Jane heels covered in ruby crystals, paired with blue socks. The references didn’t end there, because, although Lively’s outfit was very casual, with a white blouse, matching jacket, and a pair of jeans, her shirt had floral motifs, and her Chanel bag had poppies prints.

Unfortunately, her entire look was spoiled by a tiny detail that makes sense with the references but not the look: the socks. Lively’s casual outfit doesn’t go well with the socks she chose as a tribute and ended up clashing.

The Deadpool & Wolverine actor didn’t do anything Wicked-related and opted for a monochromatic look with a beige jacket, matching pants, and brown suede boots.

Dorothy’s ruby slippers are iconic to The Wizard of Oz franchise but Jon M. Chu’s adaptation will not keep them in the way everyone expects. Wicked‘s first look referenced the slippers but they weren’t ruby but silver.

This is a homage to L. Frank Baum’s novel The Wizard of Oz, as well as the source material, Gregory Maguire’s Wicked novels. There, the shoes are silver, but they were adapted to ruby on the screen to take advantage of Technicolor’s three-strip film with a more vibrant color. Costume designer Paul Tazewell also addressed the change in footwear in an interview with WWD.

“They needed to resonate in an iconic way, like the ruby slipper. I wanted for it to not just be another ruby slipper, but to be specific to the world we were creating.”

Lively has time and time again displayed her love for method dressing, and while that was a sore subject for her It Ends With Us promo, she is not letting that spoil her fun and went back at it on this occasion, and it was a modest win.

‘Deadpool wasn’t good enough:’ Ryan Reynolds is set to adapt a classic cartoon and fans wonder if he’ll save the day https://wegotthiscovered.com/movies/deadpool-wasnt-good-enough-ryan-reynolds-is-set-to-adapt-a-classic-cartoon-and-fans-wonder-if-hell-save-the-day/ https://wegotthiscovered.com/movies/deadpool-wasnt-good-enough-ryan-reynolds-is-set-to-adapt-a-classic-cartoon-and-fans-wonder-if-hell-save-the-day/#respond Mon, 25 Nov 2024 20:16:11 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.com/?p=1799437 Ryan Reynolds is coming to save another popular cartoon character.]]>

The billion-dollar success of Deadpool doesn’t appear to be enough for Ryan Reynolds. Now, he plans on tackling one of animations’ most famous mice – and no, not the big-eared one who pays Wade Wilson’s salary.

Make no mistake: 2024 was a stellar and fruitful time for Reynolds. Deadpool & Wolverine is the second-highest grossing film of the year, slashing and cackling its way to over $1.3 billion at the global box office. What’s even more remarkable is how the Canadian actor has managed to remain firmly in the headlines of the entertainment news columns, thanks to the hilarious publicity drive behind the film. Honestly, Deadpool‘s marketing strategies need to be studied in college.

It appears as if the Merc with the Mouth isn’t the only big property on the cards for Reynolds in the upcoming years, though, as Variety revealed his involvement in a Mighty Mouse adaption. According to the report, Reynolds’ production company, Maximum Effort, is set to team up with Paramount Animation for a big-screen adaptation of the old-school cartoon. In addition, Matt Lieberman, who previously worked with Reynolds on 2021’s Free Guy, will pen the script.

Debuting in 1942, Mighty Mouse follows the adventures of the titular character who’s essentially the rodent version of Superman. There have been a few animated series over the decades, and the character spun off into the comics world as well. That being said, Mighty Mouse isn’t exactly a franchise that’s popped off like Marvel or Star Wars in the recent era. Perhaps that’s part of the appeal that drew Reynolds to the project in the first place, and he’ll be able to shape the mouse, who is mighty, for a new generation of fans.

The news of Reynolds’ participation in the forthcoming Mighty Mouse movie woke up the comments section on social media. On X, the general consensus seemed to be positive toward the idea, pointing out the sensational work he’s done in turning Deadpool into a pop culture phenom. Others believe he has the necessary comedic chops to turn this into an unexpected hit. However, there are some who wonder why this is even a thing, asking if “Deadpool wasn’t good enough” for him.

At the time of writing, it isn’t clear if Reynolds’ involvement in Mighty Mouse extends beyond a producer role. As a few fans suggested, he could be the perfect person to voice the character as well. Maybe that’s a consideration that’s taking place behind the scenes. Maybe not. As long as they just lock the studio doors before Chris Pratt shows up to voice yet another animated character, everyone should be fine here.

Interestingly, this isn’t the only animated property that Reynolds is involved in at the moment. Last year, he announced that Maximum Effort would be involved in a Biker Mice from Mars animated series reboot. As per Deadline, Reynolds said: “Some people know that I am a motorcycle enthusiast, so it was only natural for us to jump on board Biker Mice from Mars. Maximum Effort and Fubo look forward to putting a new spin on this cult classic with our friends at Nacelle.”

What is it with Reynolds and his infatuation for mouse cartoon characters? Seriously. What’s next after Mighty Mouse: Pinky and the Brain? Okay, that doesn’t sound so bad when you think about it.
